Final Logo!

Discussion:
1. Discuss what you thought about creating your logo.-
-I really enjoyed creating my own logo. At first I was struggling to find out where to start because I had so many thoughts of things that described me. I was unsure of whether or not I wanted to include all the things that made me who I am, or narrow it down to one specific detail. I chose to narrow it down to three main details. I chose to focus on my initials, strength, and family and I feel as if my logo is a perfect description of me!
2. Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in the logo creation.
-When I first sat down to create my logo I just brainstormed to think of ideas to include. I came up with a shield and cross to represent my strength, my initials, family in German, and my favorite food, sport, and drink. I felt as if there was eventually a way that I would be able to combine all of these things but I just wasn’t sure if that’s what I wanted. In the first sketch I chose to draw out all of my thoughts and see which ones I liked the best. In my second sketch I chose to focus more on the shield but added more details to show how caring and loving I am. I wrote family in German and added hearts and angel wings on the outside. The third sketch I decided to incorporate the heart more and make the shield stand out more. I put the shield in the heart and put the lines around the outside to really make everything stand out. I kept my initials and family in there because those are two things that are very important to me. In the fourth sketch I decided to switch it up a bit and incorporate all of my ideas just to see how it would turn out. I wrote the word love in block and put all the things I love in the letters, but also put the shield to represent strength in the middle to tie everything together. I really liked this idea but I felt as if there was just too much going on and I didn’t think anyone would really know who it was describing when they saw it. The fifth sketch is when I really got a good picture as to what I wanted my final logo to be and I started to play around with colors. I thought I would put my initials in pink because it was my favorite color, but it just didn’t make it pop as much as I wanted it to. I had my whole name across the top which I liked, but it was a bit much. I kept the crosses in the corners to represent who I am and where I come from, with the word family in German at the bottom to represent my heritage. I really liked this logo but felt as if it could be even more basic, to the point, and better. My final logo turned out just the way I wanted. I put my initials going down the shield in blue to make it stand out so people really knew who this was about. I kept the shield and crosses because anyone who knows me knows how strong and free willed I am. I put my last name at the bottom, connected with the B, to represent that I am proud of where I came from and put Family in German at the top with a little heart to express my true love for my family. I think this logo represents me 100% and anyone who knows me would agree!

3. What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?
-I found the most important discovery to be how difficultly easy this whole process could be. When I first started I figured this would take me five minutes to do, but it takes a lot of thoughts and consideration. Having the freedom to choose anything and everything that was included was much more difficult than I thought it would have been, but I really enjoyed the whole process!
4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, powerpoint, and reading material for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
-The most important thing that I found in both of the videos was how much time and consideration goes into each logo that is designed. It is never just a one or even ten sketch process like many would think. There is so much to consider when they created both new logos that I would have never even thought of if I would not have watched the video. The powerpoint and reading important because it gave the history of logo’s but also expressed the direction on where to start with a logo. It expressed how everything shape and color has a meaning and that there are many things to consider when designing a logo.
I really enjoyed the videos, readings, and powerpoint. I felt as if each gave a valuable meaning to the creation of logos. The videos really put everything into perspective as to how many steps there really are so I found it to be very helpful.

Week 4 - Color Wheel and Shading Scale

1. Discuss what you thought about creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel.
-I thought creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel were a lot of fun. I had little difficulty with creating both but I feel as if they turned out pretty good. I decided to use a charcoal pencil to create the value scale because I thought it would turn out better and be easier, but I think I was wrong. I definitely think it turned out much better than if I were to use pencil, but it was much more difficult. I ended up with the first square being black, which is what I wanted, but then the next four after that all appeared to be the same color to me. I played around a bit with the pencil and would add some shading, erase, and repeat. What I finally ended up doing was shading with my finger. I found this to work much better because it allowed me to control how dark/light I wanted each box to be and also gave it a much cleaner look rather than seeing all of the pencil marks. The color wheel was something I had a lot of fun with. I am truly a little kid at heart and as soon as I bought my paint I had to open it up and paint all different shapes on paper. I had to try multiple times to get the colors I wanted and after a very, very, long time of trial and error I eventually came up with the exact colors I was looking for in each shade. I really enjoyed both of these processes!

2. Which media did you enjoy working with the best and why?
I enjoyed working with the color wheel best. It took much longer than I ever expected but it was really cool to combine thousands of different percentages of all different colors to finally come up with the correct shade you are looking for. Also, I enjoy working with paint much better than with a charcoal pencil. I feel as if it is much cleaner and gives a much smoother texture.

3. What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies?
The most important discovery in both of these creations was finally figuring out what it took to complete each color and shade. I thought figuring out the shading and what primary colors combined to create new colors would be much easier. I did the shading scale first and ended up with about five boxes all looking the same. I also thought that figuring out the shades to darker scales would be more difficult than the lighter scales, but for me the lighter scales were more difficult. It was tough to show a difference with the two lightest scales and no matter what I did I just couldn’t get anything light enough. With the color wheel it was the same thing. I thought if I combined red and blue then purple would appear, and if I combined yellow and red then orange would appear. Much easier said than done that’s for sure. I always would put just a little too much of one color in and then the whole combination would be wrong. This became and ongoing process but eventually everything worked out.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
-I felt as if the videos were a little bit difficult to follow. They both jumped from one step to another, explaining things in between. The most important thing I took away from these videos was the different shades and textures that are possible to be created with a single pencil and with the color wheel I really enjoyed seeing the example with the original primary colors and showing what the primary colors should be. Very interesting but also a little bit confusing.

Project 1

When first reading through the requirements for this project I was a bit nervous. I absolutely love taking pictures but am terrible and editing them so I thought I would have a really difficult time representing each meaning. I started off by re reading the definitions and brainstorming what I thought would fit under each principle/ element. The ones that came to mind immediately were emphasis and proportion. One of my favorite things to take pictures of in the summertime is flowers and so I knew immediately if I singled out one flower off of a bush then it would really emphasis the detail and put all the focus on how beautiful it really is. I absolutely love to walk through gardens in the summer and see all of the cool flowers and new that they would fit perfectly for emphasis. As I was reading this assignment I was in the middle of eating my lunch that I had brought to school with me. I just so happen to be eating an apple and so as soon as I read proportion an image of a piece of my apple came to mind. I felt as if it depicted proportion perfectly. I didn’t know right from the start what I could capture for all the rest of the topics. I figured I would brainstorm over a day or two and observe my surroundings. I live on Grand Island, right off the river, and spend a lot of time by the water. This is where I began to get ideas for balance and harmony. They two bridges are identical so I thought those would represent a perfect balance. My ideal day is one spent on the boat, outside, or just by the water and so my harmony picture represented what was peaceful and perfect for me. As the week went on I began to brainstorm more ideas but was still struggling with a lot of them. On Wednesday morning I took the emphasis photo and just began snapping pictures of things that I thought were cool or pretty. This is when all the ideas started to come to mind. The sunlight reflected off of the bundle of red, white, and purple flowers so nicely that I knew it would be perfect for light. Since fall is coming a lot of the bushes and trees are beginning to look a little more dull and beginning to droop. The picture I used for line was originally a bush that had beautiful flowers but I found one that was bare and really like all the different dimensions and lines it had. The tree bark was beginning to peel off the tree but that made the texture even more realistic and I just had happened to take a picture of an arrangement in black and white and it turned out to work for value. It represented all the different shades and how they varied from light to dark. Rhythm is also something I did on Wednesday morning but was one of the more difficult images for me. I was having a hard time finding something unique and different until I saw the cherry tree. I just thought that this image was so different but also represented rhythm with all the repetitions. Thursday night I was working on a scrap book for my nephew and happened to dump a whole bucket of alphabet stickers. As soon as I saw all the different letters and colors laying there together I thought of the image I had originally took of variety. I originally had an image with all the different sporting utilities but it was nothing impressive and I found this representation to be a little bit more interesting and unique. After I took the variety picture I began to think of all the images I had left to take and form was one of them. Form really stumped me because everything I thought of was 3 dimensional. This is when I saw an arrangement of stickers I had put together and thought it would look great and mix things up a bit. Space, unity, and motion were the last images I brainstormed and came up with a million ideas that could represent them, but never really liked any of them. Saturday morning I woke up knowing I had to finish my pictures and so I brought my camera to work with me. I work at the farmers market with my boyfriend’s family and this is where I got the ideas for the rest of my images. As soon as we parked the car I noticed the huge flag blowing in the wind. As I was unloading the truck I realized how well a bushel of peaches would represent unity and felt as if the singled out bushel of peaches picture turned out pretty neat. Space was something that kind of just fell into place. My boyfriend and I were walking around the market at the end of the day and someone happened to take a picture of us. Since we were walking so far apart, but holding hands, there was a very large space that surrounded both of us. I cropped it so that it was just our hands and it truly showed the representation of space.
I really enjoyed completing this project because it made me realize how many different elements and possibilities each and every picture could include.

Week Three - How Color Effects Emotion

1. Describe Color and its effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.
Ø  Color has the power to effect a person’s emotions in many different ways. According to Getlein (2010), Various studies have demonstrated that color affects a wide range of psychological and physiological responses.” (pg.87) People who have a favorite color may wear clothes or paint their room that color just to reinforce comfort. Restaurants often use the color red because it is believed that it increases appetites. The color blue is said to lower blood pressure and pulse, and the color bubble gum pink is said to make children more calm. These colors seem to have these effects on our culture but other culture may vary. For example, in my culture red and green represent Christmas and a time of giving, where as to Van Gogh used red and green to represent angry or distraught. Each color has such a variety of shades that each shade could cause a different emotion, and every emotion could be different for every individual.
2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?
Ø  The aspect that I found most fascinating is the fact that all colors are dependent on light and all colors are just different components of light. I have never studied colors and to learn about them now really interests me. The fact that sunlight can refract into different colors really makes sense now. For example, I have recently been shopping for dresses for my sister’s wedding and one thing mother always says is “Well take it outside and make sure you like it in the sunlight too before you buy it.” This is something I never really understood but now I realize how much of an effect sun light has color.  Also, I never knew much about the primary, secondary, or intermediate colors. I knew that primary colors were main colors that were not mixed but never knew the difference between secondary and intermediate. I now know that secondary are made by combining two primary colors and intermediate are made by combining a primary and adjacent secondary color.  There are so many theories about color that many people know nothing about, like myself, which is upsetting because it is so interesting.
3. In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and its effects on emotions?
Ø  The main thing that impacted my emotions in the Color video was watching June Redfern  stress and change her painting so much. The first painting she did I felt was very dark and felt very gloomy to me and that is not what I felt while watching her sketch the outline out in Venice. June felt the same way and was frustrated and annoyed with the outcome. The colors in this painting were driving her crazy and were annoying me also because I knew that was not the correct feeling. The end painting was much brighter with many more changes that impacted my emotions to completely change. I felt as if the colors she had chosen for the final painting made it a much more positive painting and represented the peaceful surroundings she was going for much better than where she started in the beginning. It amazes me how just a few changes in color can change the whole emotion of a painting and this was the perfect example.
4. In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and its effects on emotions?
Ø  Devine’s art had the biggest impact on my regards to effects and emotions because it was so different and had such contrast than the rest of the paintings that depicted the past as a lovely dream and were much softer. Devein on the other hand represented noble virtue for the people and showed patriotic people sacrificing themselves, fighting for the good, and represented that bad is easy but good must be fought for. This has an impact for me because it changes your thoughts of the past immediately and makes you feel bad for the people. He used dark colors and represented everyone’s facial expression and the fear so well.

Second Post - Aesthetics

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Although each of these videos discussed the topics of what is are and aesthetics, they were very different. Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts talked much more about the history of art and the people who helped develop it along the way. CARTA: Neurobiology and Art and Aesthetics on the other hand talked a lot about where the art image is developed in the brain, and how the brain depicts the different aesthetic images.

Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts: Key Concepts
Ø  Aesthetics can be defined as the philosophical study of beauty and art
Ø  Ideas can only be grasped through reason, besides the idea of beauty
Ø  Plato had low opinions of philosophers and stated that artists copy reality and their art work is just another copy of a different image
Ø  Aristotle, Plato’s student, thought that Philosophers are the real ones who know how to tell the difference between real and illusion and developed the ideas of aesthetics
Ø  “The chief forms of beauty are order and symmetry and definiteness, which the mathematical sciences demonstrate in a special degree” Aristotle
Ø  The foundation for aesthetics was found  in 18th century England
Ø  Neoclassical aesthetics evolve in renaissance
Ø  The ideas that beauty is good and can be made and determined differently by every individual

CARTA: Neurobiology and Art and Aesthetics: Key Concepts
Ø  Works of art can be defined as artifacts and human productions specialized for inter subjective communication that uses symbolic forms
Ø  Art is a nonverbal form of communication of emotional states, knowledge, and experience
Ø  Art in constant revolution = art history
Ø  Learned how the brain develops and where are thoughts and emotion develop
Ø  Takes 15 years for the brain to fully develop
Ø  Learned how the brain reacts to different images (EX. surprise/used to seeing something)
Ø  Artists show conception of the world/make us aware
Ø  Evolutionary origins of art and aesthetics:
Ø              -sexual selection
Ø              -group selection
Ø              -inter subject communication and social bonding
Ø              -by product of brain evolution
Ø  The point of art is to deliberately ultra/distort image to produce pleasing effect on the brain(Picasso)
Ø  AESTHETIC APPEAL
Ø              - everyone is slightly different, males, birds, Indians, women and sees everything differently
Ø              -a bird sees a different image than a man( man’s suit, camouflage)
Ø              -brain puts everything together and forms correct image
2. Which philosopher's theroy on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosphers name, era (time in history), and contribtion to the aesthetic theory in your response.
- The philosopher I chose was Aristotle. Aristotle was a student of Plato’s and was an important philosopher from 384-322 BC. His contribution to the aesthetic theory was that he believed that everything that was created was imitated. Although he was not as persistent on this topic as Plato and he was much more flexible with ideas and accepted exceptions.

3. What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture?
I truly enjoyed listening to Changeux and Ramachandran’s scientific view. Although it was very hard to understand them both at times, they both explained very interesting facts. I felt as if Changeux explained the beginning steps of how an image is depicted by explaining how the brain develops, the pathways of the brain, and where different emotions are triggered, like the element of surprise and scared. Ramachandran’s view was more of how we depict the image we see and how we put the pieces together. He used a great example of how when a man gets dressed for work he can notice that since his shirt has blue buttons he must wear a blue tie/coat. He also discussed how every individual can create a picture of the same idea, but they will still be completely different. For example, a bird may create an image of the forest and highlight the flowers and little cherries, where as a female may create an image of the forest and highlight the sun and the trees.

4. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos and reading were similar in many ways. They both discuss how each piece of art is different from one another and can mean completely opposite things to two different people. The book uses the example of how a clay pot to our culture does not represent anything, but to the Japanese culture it would be the focus of intense appreciation. This is very similar as the Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts video because to Plato poems and philosophy meant nothing and were pointless, but to Aristotle they were a form of art. They also both give backgrounds as to where aesthetics came from, the meaning, and why it is important.
5. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading?
- I found the films to be very hard to understand and follow. The accents were very difficult to hear and I feel as if I would have enjoyed them much more if there were subtitles to follow. I felt as if they were both very interesting still and also added a lot of new information to my knowledge of aesthetics. I never knew how in-depth and involved the revolution of art and poetry were. They added a lot of depth to the topics in the reading by giving much more detail and background. The CARTA: Neurobiology and Art and Aesthetics video really took my understanding to the next level because it explained how the brain functions and each step that each image is sent through. Also, the Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts video went into much further detail with the story of Plato and Aristotle and when and where the beginnings of aesthetics started. The book gave a very general definition and explanation of aesthetics and the videos added much more detail.
